Nathan Lyon speared through Bangladesh’s batting line-up with a five-wicket haul, but even though he left the hosts reeling on the first day in Chittagong, Sabbir Rahman and captain Mushfiqur Rahim came to the rescue with knocks of 66 and 62 not out respectively.
Bangladesh came into the match on a high as they beat Australia for the first time in the longest format in the first Test in Dhaka.
Electing to bat first, Bangladesh were dealt two early blows as Lyon trapped Tamim Iqbal and Imrul Kayes lbw for nine and four runs respectively.
Kayes was not given out initially, but Australia opted to review the decision and it went in their favour as replays showed that the ball was crashing into the stumps.
Mominul Haque and Soumya Sarkar began to rebuild the innings following the loss of Tamim and Kayes, but after amassing a 49-run partnership, Sarkar was given out lbw off the bowling of Lyon for 33 right on the stroke of lunch.
Mominul went on to score 31 before he suffered the same fate as the trio who got out before him.
After Lyon ripped through Bangladesh’s top order, Ashton Agar joined the party when Shakib Al Hasan was caught behind off his bowling for 24.
Sabbir and Rahim stemmed the bleeding and kept Australia at bay with a 105-run partnership, during which both batsmen brought up their half-centuries.

With Bangladesh beginning to gain some momentum, Lyon provided the breakthrough for Australia once again as Sabbir was stumped by Matthew Wade off his bowling for a career-best 66, which came off 113 balls and included six boundaries and a six.

Rahim and Nasir Hossain kept the runs flowing with an unbeaten 31-run stand before stumps was called.
Rahim finished on 62 off 149 balls, which included five boundaries, while Nasir struck three boundaries during his 33-ball 19.
Lyon was easily the pick of the bowlers with five wickets, while Agar claimed one.
Bangladesh ended day one on 253/6 and will continue batting on Tuesday at 10:00 local time or 04:00 GMT.
