Andre McCarthy smashed a game-winning 61 to lead the Jamaica Tallwahs to a five-wicket win over the St Lucia Stars and into third place on the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) standings.

Opting to bat first, the Stars made a decent start to their innings before Mohammad Sami took two wickets in the space of four balls as he dismissed Johnson Charles and Shane Watson for 13 and one run respectively.

Andre Fletcher and Marlon Samuels came to the rescue for the Stars as they amassed a 103-run partnership, during which both batsmen brought up their half-centuries, before Samuels was removed by Rovman Powell for 54 off 36 balls, which included two boundaries and four sixes.

The Stars began to collapse after Samuels’ dismissal, but Fletcher went on to make an unbeaten 84 off 53 deliveries, which included seven boundaries and four sixes, to lead his side to 173/7 off their 20 overs.

Sami was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Powell and Kesrick Williams chipped in with two wickets apiece.

Chasing 174 to win, the Tallawahs made a solid start to their innings before opening batsman Glenn Phillips was sent packing by Shane Shillingford for 32.

Lendl Simmons, captain Kumar Sangakkara and Powell fell shortly after, but McCarthy and Jonathan Foo stabilised the innings with a 41-run partnership.

Even though Foo ended up being clean bowled by Mitchell McClenaghan for 22, McCarthy and Imad Wasim finished things off with an unbeaten 45-run stand.

McCarthy scored 61 off 37 balls, which included three boundaries and four sixes, while Wasim remained undefeated on 18 off nine deliveries, which included three boundaries.

McClenaghan, Shillingford, Samuels and Timil Patel claimed one wicket each.
