Sri Lanka all-rounder Asela Gunaratne could be ruled out for the rest of the ongoing Test series against India after he fractured his left thumb while fielding on the opening day of the first Test in Galle.
Gunaratne, who will definitely play no further part in the first Test, suffered the injury when attempting to take a catch to dismiss India opener Shikhar Dhawan in the 14th over of the match. Upon diving to his left, the ball struck Gunaratne on the end of his thumb and he immediately clutched his hand.
With a fracture having been revealed after he underwent scans in Galle, Gunaratne is now being transported to Colombo, where he will undergo surgery.
Dhawan was on 31 when he was dropped by Gunaratne and went on to score a century.
