The West Indies have recalled flamboyant opener Chris Gayle for the lone Twenty20 International against India on Sunday in Jamaica.
Gayle, who has not played international cricket since the 2016 World Twenty20, comes into the squad at the expense of batsman Lendl Simmons, who failed to fire in the West Indies’ last Twenty20 assignment against Afghanistan as he made scores of 6, 17 not out and 15 respectively.
West Indies Test and ODI captain Jason Holder, who was rested for the Twenty20 series against Afghanistan, will be sidelined once again.
“We welcome Chris back to the T20 squad. He is the most prolific batsman in this format and will add value to our team at the top of the order,” Courtney Browne, the West Indies’ chairman of selectors, said. “He will get the chance to play on his home ground and against a top-quality Indian team.”
The West Indies are currently involved in a five-match ODI series against India and trail 2-1 going into the final match on Thursday.
