South Africa captain Faf du Plessis is still unlikely to feature in the first Test against England next week despite his first child having been born.

According to a Cricket South Africa spokesperson, it was a “difficult birth” and Du Plessis will only head back to England once his child and his wife Imari are “settled”.

If Du Plessis is ruled out of the first Test, which begins on July 6 at Lord’s, Dean Elgar will take over as captain. Elgar is currently leading the Proteas in their ongoing warm-up game against the England Lions in Worcester.

Meanwhile, South Africa will be sweating over the fitness of pace bowler Vernon Philander, who had to be sidelined for the warm-up fixture due to an ankle injury. However, it is understood that the team management are confident he will be fit for the first Test.

Elsewhere, head coach Russell Domingo has returned to England after he flew back to South Africa due to a family emergency.

Domingo’s mother was seriously injured in a car accident in Port Elizabeth, but she has since been discharged from the hospital.
