A BCCI official has revealed that Anil Kumble gave a player a “dressing down” right after the team’s 180-run loss to Pakistan in the Champions Trophy final.

While there is no doubt that Kumble, who resigned as India’s head coach on Tuesday, would have been disappointed with his side’s dismal performance in the final, the official insisted that the timing of Kumble’s heated talk with the player couldn’t have been worse.

“After the final he gave a big dressing-down to the player,” the official said. “There is a time for everything. Team has just lost. They are down. You come and [give the dressing down].”

Prior to stepping down as head coach, Kumble had agreed to coach India during the upcoming limited overs tour of the West Indies. The BCCI had agreed to extend Kumble’s contract for that series even though his original contract was supposed to expire after the Champions Trophy.

The reason behind the small contract extension was due to the fact that the BCCI-appointed Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which consists of Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman, wanted more time to decide on who should become India’s next head coach.

“Kumble had accepted to travel to the West Indies, but that was subject to resolving the differences,” the BCCI official said.

Kumble had re-applied to continue on as India’s head coach, but after stepping down, a new person will take charge of the team.

As of now, the candidates that have been shortlisted include Virender Sehwag, Tom Moody, Richard Pybus, Dodda Ganesh and Lalchand Rajput.
