Sandeep Sharma’s three-wicket haul and Axar Patel’s all-round performance saw the Kings XI Punjab defend a score of 138 and beat the Royal Challengers Bangalore by 19 runs.

Opting to bowl first, the Royal Challengers struck on the fifth ball of the match as Kings XI opener Hashim Amla was caught behind off the bowling of Aniket Choudhary for one run.

With wickets continuing to fall at regular intervals, the Kings XI found themselves in all sorts of trouble at 78/5 in the 14th over.

However, wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha scored 21 and Patel added an unbeaten 17-ball 38 to help their side finish on 138/7.

Choudhary and Yuzvendra Chahal picked up two wickets apiece, while Sreenath Aravind, Shane Watson and Pawan Negi chipped in with one wicket each.

Chasing 139 to win, Chris Gayle failed to trouble the scorersĀ as he was removed by Sandeep for a duck on the fourth ball of the innings.

Sandeep then proceeded to take out captain Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers and Kedar Jadhav to leave the Royal Challengers reeling at 52/4.

Patel joined the party after Sandeep’s rampage as he had Watson caught behind for just three runs.

Opener Mandeep Singh, who had survived up to this point, made 46 off 40 balls, which included five boundaries and two sixes, before he was clean bowled by captain Glenn Maxwell.

Even though Negi mustered a valiant 21, it was not enough to see his side to victory as they were skittled out for 119.

Sandeep and Patel took three wickets apiece, while Maxwell and Mohit Sharma claimed two wickets each.

Sandeep was named Man of the Match.
