The Gujarat Lions avoided losing their third game in a row thanks to captain Suresh Raina, who smashed a superb 84, to lead his side to a four-wicket win over the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Being put in to bat first, the Knight Riders made a scorching start to their innings courtesy of opener Sunil Narine, who bashed a 17-ball 42.

Narine scored all his runs in boundaries as he struck nine boundaries and a six, but his entertaining innings came to an end when he was dismissed by Raina.

Captain Gautam Gambhir and wicketkeeper Robin Uthappa put together a 69-run partnership before Gambhir was removed by James Faulkner for 33.

Uthappa and Manish Pandey kept the runs flowing with a 55-run stand before Uthappa was sent packing by Praveen Kumar for 72 off 48 balls, which included eight boundaries and two sixes.

Thanks to Pandey chipping in with 24, the Knight Riders finished on 187/5 off their 20 overs.

Raina, Faulkner, Kumar and Basil Thampi picked up one wicket apiece.

Chasing 188 to win, the Lions got off to a similar start as the Knight Riders before opening batsman Aaron Finch fell to Nathan Coulter-Nile for 31.

The Lions continued to lose wickets at regular intervals after Finch’s dismissal, but thanks to Raina, they remained in contention.

After being reduced to 122/5 in the 13th over, Raina dominated the majority of his 58-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja.

Raina’s resistance ultimately came to an end when he was on 84, which came off 46 balls and included nine boundaries and four sixes.

Nonetheless, the Lions proceeded to mop up the remaining runs and won the match with 10 balls to spare.

Coulter-Nile and Kuldeep Yadav took two wickets apiece, while Chris Woakes and Umesh Yadav claimed one wicket each.

Raina was named Man of the Match.
