Chris Gayle etched his name in the record books by becoming the first man to score 10,000 runs in Twenty20 cricket during the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s 21-run win over the Gujarat Lions.

Gayle, who hammered a fabulous 77, was well supported by captain Virat Kohli, who smashed a brilliant 64.

Being put in to bat first, the Royal Challengers got off to a magnificent start as Gayle and Kohli amassed a 122-run partnership, during which Gayle sailed past his half-century.

With the Lions reeling as a result of Gayle’s blitz, they were determined to bring his reign of dominance to an end.

Ultimately, it was Basil Thampi who provided the breakthrough for the Lions as he trapped Gayle lbw for 77 off 38 balls, which included five boundaries and seven sixes.

Kohli went on to make 64 off 50 deliveries, which included seven boundaries and a six, before he was dismissed by Dhawal Kulkarni.

Despite losing Gayle and Kohli, the Royal Challengers finished their innings on a high as Travis Head and Kedar Jadhav put together an unbeaten 54-run partnership.

Head ended up making 30 not out, while Jadhav remained undefeated on 38 as the Royal Challengers made 213/2 off their 20 overs.

Thampi and Kulkarni picked up one wicket apiece.

Chasing 214 to win, the Lions lost opener Dwyane Smith on the eighth ball of the innings as he was sent packing by Yuzvendra Chahal for just one run.

Captain Suresh Raina fell shortly after for a quickfire 23 runs, but Brendon McCullum and Aaron Finch stabilised the innings with a 66-run partnership, during which McCullum brought up his fifty.

Finch ended up falling for 19, while Dinesh Karthik could only add one run. To make matters worse, McCullum was on his way back to the pavilion soon after as he was removed by Chahal for 72 off 44 balls, which included two boundaries and seven sixes.

Even though Ravindra Jadeja and Ishan Kishan scored 23 and 39 respectively, their valiant efforts went in vain as the Lions fell well short of their target.

Chahal was the most successful bowler with three wickets, while Adam Milne, Sreenath Aravind and Pawan Negi claimed one wicket each.

Gayle was named Man of the Match.
