Andrew Tye had an Indian Premier League (IPL) debut to remember as he took a five-wicket haul to lead the Gujarat Lions to a seven-wicket win over the Rising Pune Supergiants.
Choosing to bowl first, the Lions only had to wait three balls until they got their first wicket as Praveen Kumar took out Ajinkya Rahane for a duck.
Rahul Tripathi and captain Steve Smith made up for the early loss of Rahane with a 64-run partnership before Tripathi was dismissed by Tye for 33.
Smith ended up making 43 and once he was gone, Tye speared through the Lions’ middle and lower order, which led to them finishing on 171/8 off their 20 overs.
Tye was the pick of the bowlers with five wickets, while Smith, Kumar and Ravindra Jadeja chipped in with one wicket apiece.
Chasing 172 to win, Smith and Brendon McCullum got the Lions off to a blistering start as the duo put together a 94-run partnership in just 53 balls.
However, they ended up falling in quick succession for 47 and 49 respectively, along with Dinesh Karthik, who only made three runs.
Nonetheless, captain Suresh Raina and Aaron Finch finished things off with an unbeaten 61-run partnership as the Lions won the match with two overs to spare.
Raina concluded the match on 35, while Finch remained undefeated on 33.
Shardul Thakur, Imran Tahir and Rahul Chahar claimed one wicket each.
Tye was named Man of the Match.
