India batsman Cheteshwar Pujara, all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja and opener Murali Vijay have all been awarded with Grade-A contracts for their superb performances in the ongoing home season.

The trio join captain Virat Kohli, wicketkeeper-batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni, all-rounder Ravichandran Ashwin and batsman Ajinkya Rahane in the list of players with Grade-A contracts.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also announced that the annual retainership of each contract category will be doubled. What this means is that all players with a Grade-A contract will earn INR 2 crore (USD 300,000 approx) instead of INR 1 crore (USD 150,000 approx).

As for those with Grade-B and Grade-C contracts, they will receive INR 1 crore and INR 50 lakh (USD 76,400 approx) respectively.

That is not the only increase though as the BCCI have confirmed that match fees for ODIs will go up from INR 4 lakh (USD 6,100 approx) to INR 6 lakh (USD 9,000 approx). For Twenty20 Internationals, players will receive INR 3 lakh (USD 4,500 approx) per match instead of INR 2 lakh (USD 3,050 approx).

As for Test matches, the payment per game will rise from INR 7 lakh (USD 10,000 approx) to INR 15 lakh (USD 23,000 approx).

Opening batsman Lokesh Rahul, wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha, pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah and veteran all-rounder Yuvraj Singh were upgraded to Grade-B contracts, but opener Shikhar Dhawan and batsman Ambati Rayudu were demoted to Grade-C contracts.

The decision to hike up the prices of the contracts and match fees was taken by the BCCI and the Supreme Court appointed Committee of Administrators (CoA).

“From 2010 onwards it [the central contracts] has not been been reviewed. So we have taken inputs from lots of people and we have reviewed it,” Vinod Rai, who is the chairman of the CoA, said.

The new contracts are valid from October 1, 2016, to September 30, 2017.
