South Africa have called up Dane Piedt for the ongoing tour of New Zealand in order to have another spin option.

Piedt is currently waiting on his visa and is set to join the rest of the Proteas this weekend.

Should everything go smoothly, he will be considered for selection for the third Test in Hamilton on March 25.

Even though Piedt has not played Test cricket since August 2016, he was drafted into the South African side ahead of Tabraiz Shamsi, who travelled to Australia with the national team last year, and Imran Tahir, who has not featured in the longest format of the game since December 2015.

Keshav Maharaj is the lone specialist spinner in South Africa’s squad at the moment and after taking his maiden five-wicket haul in the first Test in Dunedin, which ended as a draw, the Proteas feel that he could use some assistance.

Piedt will be relieved by the call-up as during a challenging domestic season with the Cobras, he did consider signing a Kolpak deal.
