South Africa seamer Morne Morkel is currently on the verge of recovering from a back injury, but along the way, he was told that he had no chance of playing the sport he loved ever again.

Morkel, though, turned a deaf ear to such comments and worked hard to get back to full fitness. In fact, he is hoping to make his international comeback in the three-Test series against New Zealand, which begins on March 8 in Dunedin.

“No one was 100% sure of what was going on with my back and to be honest there was a time when I was in doubt about my future‚” Morkel told Times Live. “I was told that I would never be able to play cricket again and it was a mental thing to go to the gym. One doctor actually told me that my days as a player were numbered which was not a nice thing to hear.”

Even if he fails to return in the upcoming series against New Zealand, Morkel, who last played international cricket in June last year, has already ruled himself out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) so that he can be in the best shape possible ahead of the Proteas’ tour of England in May.
