Bangladesh spinner Arafat Sunny was sent to prison by a Dhaka court after his appeals for a fresh remand and bail were denied on Sunday.

Arafat has been accused of demanding a dowry from and assaulting Nasrin Sultana, who claims to be the cricketer’s wife. In addition to this, Nasrin claims that Arafat abandoned her after the assault.

Investigating officer Masudur Rahman Sunny and Arafat’s lawyer, Muraduzzaman Murad, both wanted a new remand that would last seven days, but Dhaka Metropolitan Judge Sarafat Jaman Ansari shot down their requests.

Nasrin filed a case against Arafat last month, and also against his mother, under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act.

According to the case statement, Nasrin married Arafat on December 4, 2014 following an endowment of Tk5.1 lakh.

On July 29, 2015, Arafat’s mother allegedly demanded a dowry of Tk20 lakh. Furthermore, Nasrin claims that Arafat’s mother and a few other people assaulted her on a road near Mohammadpur police station on January 22.

Should Arafat be found guilty of the charges against him, he could spend up to 14 years in jail.
