South Africa captain AB de Villiers has called on his side to keep their momentum going by looking to whitewash Sri Lanka in their ongoing ODI series.

The Proteas secured an unassailable 3-0 lead in the five-match series following their seven-wicket win in the third ODI in Johannesburg on Saturday.

And while he is pleased to have already wrapped up the series, De Villiers wants South Africa to show no mercy and complete a 5-0 series whitewash.

“There were too many 3-2 [series scores] in the past and we’ve had too many opportunities to win series 5-0 and 4-0,” he said. “We are all a bit sick and tired of not taking our opportunities and we are sitting here with another opportunity.

“We try to be clinical about every game we play with a bit more emphasis and importance on getting results in every single game we play and not just trying to win a series.

“I don’t want to mention it too often and I don’t want to make it our main thing that we play for 5-0 whitewashes‚ because that can backfire quickly.”

Meanwhile, De Villiers was also asked about the swarm of bees that held up play for an hour at the Wanderers.

Responding to the question, the 32-year-old said: “Guys‚ we are talking about bees. It was an annoying break. That’s all I can say.”

The fourth ODI between South Africa and Sri Lanka will be held on Tuesday in Cape Town.
