Mitchell Swepson took two wickets in an extremely economical spell as the Brisbane Heat hammered the Melbourne Stars by seven wickets to book their spot in the semi-finals of the Big Bash League (BBL).

Choosing to bat first, the Stars got off to a horrendous start as after the first ball of the match was called a wide, Mark Steketee took out Rob Quiney and Kevin Pietersen in successive deliveries.

Luke Wright and wicketkeeper Seb Gotch made up for the early loss of Quiney and Pietersen by putting together a 55-run partnership before Gotch was clean bowled by Swepson for 30.

Swepson struck again the very next ball as Marcus Stoinis suffered the same fate as Gotch did.

Wright and David Hussey stemmed the bleeding with a 54-run stand before Hussey was dismissed by Tymal Mills for 29.

Evan Gulbis and Ben Hilfenhaus fell shortly after, but Wright went on to make an unbeaten 60, which came off 55 balls and included three boundaries and two sixes, as the Stars finished on 138/7 off their 20 overs.

Steketee and Swepson picked up two wickets apiece, while Mills, Ben Cutting and Jack Wildermuth chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Chasing 139 to win, the Heat lost Jimmy Peirson and Nathan Reardon early on before Sam Heazlett fell after making an encouraging 39.

Alex Ross and stand-in captain Joe Burns finished things off with an unbeaten 74-run partnership as the Heat won the match with 11 balls to spare.

Ross finished on 46 off 40 balls, which included four boundaries, while Burns remained undefeated on 42 off 32 deliveries, which included two boundaries and three sixes.

Hilfenhaus, Gulbis and Scott Boland claimed one wicket each.

Swepson was named Man of the Match.
