The Melbourne Stars rose to the top of the Big Bash League (BBL) points table after taking down the Perth Scorchers by seven wickets.

Choosing to bat first, the Scorchers found themselves in a world of trouble early on as a number of quick strikes saw them get reduced to 34/5 in the eighth over.

Andrew Tye and Ashton Turner temporarily stemmed the bleeding with a 44-run partnership before Turner was dismissed by Scott Boland for 15.

Tye went on to make 42 off 33 balls, which included three boundaries and a six, before he was sent packing by Ben Hilfenhaus.

Despite this, Ashton Agar and Tim Bresnan scored 29 and 20 respectively as they put together an unbeaten 51-run stand to help the Scorchers finish on 134/7 off their 20 overs.

Boland, Hilfenhaus and Michael Beer picked up two wickets apiece, while Marcus Stoinis took one.

Chasing 135 to win, the Stars got off to a blistering start courtesy of opener Rob Quiney before Luke Wright was removed by Jhye Richardson for seven runs.

Quiney ended up making 35 before he was on his way back to the pavilion, while wicketkeeper Peter Handscomb could only score three runs before falling to Richardson.

Kevin Pietersen and Stoinis came to the rescue for the Stars as they finished off the match with an unbeaten 56-run partnership.

Pietersen concluded the match on 44 off 42 balls, which included three boundaries and a six, while Stoinis smashed 40 off 23 deliveries, which included two boundaries and three sixes.
