Veteran Sri Lanka seamer Lasith Malinga will play no part in the upcoming limited overs series against South Africa following a bout of dengue fever.
Malinga, who last played for his country in the Asia Cup in February 2016, had been on the road to recovery from a bone bruise in his left knee, which had led to him missing the World Twenty20 and Indian Premier League (IPL) last year.
However, he has back training by September and was increasing his workload in an attempt to become fully fit by the start of the limited overs series against the Proteas.
But, his journey to making his long-awaited international comeback was halted just prior to Christmas when he was diagnosed with dengue fever, which is a mosquito-borne disease.
Sri Lanka will take on South Africa in a three-match Twenty20 series, which begins on January 20, before the five-match ODI series gets underway eight days later.
