David Warner has not been at his best with the bat in Test cricket as of late, but the Australian vice-captain is optimistic that his disappointing run of form will come to an end sooner rather than later.
Warner last scored a Test century against the West Indies at the beginning of the year, but since then, he has passed 50 only twice in 17 innings.
However, with the Boxing Day Test against Pakistan in Melbourne just two days away, Warner is hoping to rectify his rough patch with the bat.
“I go out there every time to try and put as many runs on the board as I can — same mindset, same process I go through with training,” he said. “At the moment I’m hitting them well enough in the nets and not making them in the middle. The tide will change, many players before have experienced the same thing.
“I’ve just got to keep a level head, a cool head and make sure I watch every ball as hard and as closely as I can.”
Meanwhile, Warner also feels that uncapped Western Australia all-rounder Hilton Cartwright will rise to the occasion should he be given an opportunity to make his debut in the Boxing Day Test.
Cartwright was called up to the squad as a cover for the pace trio of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Jackson Bird after a strenuous first Test in Brisbane, where they combined to bowl a total of 157 overs in the match, 113 of which came in the second innings.
“I haven’t seen much of him. I don’t think I’ve played a game against Hilton that I can remember,” Warner said about Cartwright. “He looks a good player. He’s obviously scored some runs and he’s good with the ball. If he gets his chance I’m sure he’ll go out there and give 100 per cent.”
