Legendary Australia leg-spinner Shane Warne has thrown his hat in the ring to coach Australia during their three-match Twenty20 series against Sri Lanka in February.
Australia need a coach just for that series as regular head coach Darren Lehmann will be in India will the Test team for a four-Test series.
Warne is the latest name to come up for the temporary coaching position as Ryan Harris, Brad Haddin, Jason Gillespie, Ricky Ponting, Michael Hussey and Brad Hodge have all been mentioned as potential candidates.
“We are speaking to a number of people about the prospect of coaching the T20 international squad against Sri Lanka as head coach and assistant coach, Darren Lehmann and David Saker, will be in India,” a Cricket Australia spokesperson said. “At this stage no decision has been made on an appointment.”
The six former aforementioned players all have more coaching experience and qualifications than Warne, and Harris and Haddin will serve as assistant coaches during Australia’s three-match ODI series in New Zealand in December.
However, Warne did serve as Australia’s spin consultant two years ago when the national team were preparing for the 2014 World Twenty20.
“There’s no better person than Shane to help guide the spinners we select in that squad,” Lehmann said at the time. “We believe our national teams can really benefit from more specific skill-based coaching as and when it is needed.”
