Manan Vohra and Murali Vijay both made half-centuries as Kings XI Punjab beat Rising Pune Supergiants by six wickets to win their first match of the 2016 IPL.

Supergiants captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni would have been mulling over his decision to bat first as Faf du Plessis was the only batsman to have a major impact with the bat as he smashed 67 off 53 balls, which included eight boundaries.

With Steven Smith’s 38 being the only other decent contribution, the Supergiants finished on 152/7 off their 20 overs.

Mohit Sharma was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Sandeep Sharma snapped up two and Kyle Abbott chipped in with one.

Chasing 153 to win, Punjab got off to a spectacular start as Vohra and Vijay amassed a 97-run partnership before Vohra was trapped lbw by Ankit Sharma for 51 off 33 balls, which included seven boundaries.

Shaun Marsh fell shortly after for four runs before Vijay was caught behind off the bowling of Murugan Ashwin for 53, which came off 49 deliveries and included five boundaries and two sixes.

Punjab skipper David Miller’s stay at the crease was a short one, but despite the flurry of wickets, Glenn Maxwell led his side to victory with a quickfire 32 not out.

Ashwin was the most successful bowler with three wickets, while Sharma claimed one.

Vohra was named Man of the Match.
