Ireland were ousted from the World Twenty20 after their match against Bangladesh in Dharamsala was rained off.

Ireland captain William Porterfield opted to bowl first after the match had been reduced to 12 overs per side due to heavy rain.

However, Porterfield would have been brooding over his decision to bowl first initially as Bangladesh got off to a superb start thanks to Tamim Iqbal and Soumya Sarkar’s 61-run partnership.

Andy McBrine provided the breakthrough for Ireland when Sarkar was stumped off his bowling for 20.

Iqbal went on to make 47 off 26 balls, which included three boundaries and four sixes, before he was caught by Porterfield off the bowling of George Dockrell.

Bangladesh were on track for an excellent score as they were on 94/2 after eight overs, but they never got a chance to finish their innings as the rain returned.

With the rain refusing to relent, the umpires had no choice but to call the match off.

McBrine and Dockrell claimed one wicket each.

The result sees Ireland’s World Twenty20 campaign come to an end, while Bangladesh will have to beat Oman to progress to the Super 10 stage of the tournament.
