Australia all-rounder Glenn Maxwell will be sidelined for the first Twenty20 International against India due to a hamstring injury, according to acting head coach Michael Di Venuto.

Di Venuto, who has taken over for regular coach Darren Lehmann after he was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis, also confirmed that Maxwell has flown straight to Melbourne, which is where the second Twenty20 International will be held.

“He has still got a little, slight hamstring niggle so he flew straight to Melbourne and will spend a few days in Melbourne at home and join the squad when we get there in a couple of days,” Di Venuto said.

Di Venuto added that he hopes to let every player in the squad play “one or two games at least” in order to give them some experience ahead of the World Twenty20 in India in March.

“Obviously, there’s a big carrot at the end of this with the World Cup team being picked, and you know you can only pick 15 people, so we want to give people opportunities to see what they can do,” Di Venuto said.
