Plunkett will undergo a fitness test on Thursday

Liam Plunkett’s hopes of joining the England team for the upcoming limited overs series against South Africa could go up in smoke after he suffered a thigh injury.

Plunkett was called up as a replacement for fellow pace bowler Steven Finn, who suffered a side strain and was ruled out for the remainder of the tour.

However, Plunkett, who is currently in the United Arab Emirates with the England Lions, may not be travelling to South Africa has been diagnosed with a strained a muscle in his left thigh.

Plunkett will undergo a fitness test on Thursday, but was ruled unfit for the first ODI against Pakistan A in Dubai on Wednesday.

The first ODI between South Africa and England will take place on February 3 in Bloemfontein.
