Australia captain Steven Smith and batsman George Bailey both scored centuries as the Baggy Greens downed India by five wickets in the first ODI in Perth.

However, India opener Rohit Sharma deserves a lot of credit for his valiant knock of 171, which is now the highest ODI score against Australia in Australia.

India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni would have been thrilled with his decision to bat first even though opener Shikhar Dhawan was dismissed early on as Virat Kohli and Sharma amassed a 207-run partnership, during which Sharma brought up his ninth ODI century and Kohli his half-century, before Kohli was caught by Aaron Finch at long-on off the bowling of James Faulkner.

Kohli’s excellent knock of 91 came off 97 balls and included nine boundaries and a six.

Despite losing Dhoni shortly after for 18, Sharma carried India to 309/3 off their 50 overs with his unbeaten knock of 171, which came off 163 balls and included 13 boundaries and seven sixes.

Faulkner was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, while Josh Hazlewood chipped in with one.

Chasing 310 to win, Australia found themselves in trouble early on as debutant Barinder Sran dismissed Finch and David Warner in quick succession.

Smith and Bailey steered the innings back in the right direction with a 242-run stand, during which Smith registered his fifth ODI century and Bailey his third, before Bailey was caught by Bhuvneshwar Kumar at long-off off the bowling of Ravichandran Ashwin.

Bailey’s superb innings of 112 came off 120 balls and included seven boundaries and two sixes.

Glenn Maxwell fell shortly after before Smith was dismissed for a career-best 149, which came off 135 deliveries and included 11 boundaries and two sixes.

Despite the late flurry of wickets, Australia still reached their target with four balls to spare.

Sran was the most successful bowler with three wickets, while Ashwin claimed two.

Smith was named Man of the Match.
