“Dale Steyn is pretty much 50/50”

South Africa pace bowler Dale Steyn’s chances of playing in the third Test against England in Johannesburg are “50/50”, according to Proteas team manager Mohammed Moosajee.

Steyn was ruled out of the second Test in Cape Town after he injured his shoulder during the first Test in Durban, which South Africa lost by 241 runs.

“Dale Steyn is pretty much 50/50. He [had an] appointment with a shoulder specialist in Cape Town [on Thursday] for another opinion and will be reassessed when we regroup in Johannesburg on Monday,” Moosajee said.

Meanwhile, fellow seamer Vernon Philander has been ruled out of the series as he is still recovering from an ankle injury he suffered while playing football during the tour of India in November.

However, there was good news for the Proteas regarding fast bowler Kyle Abbott as the 28-year-old is set to be available for the third Test after missing the second Test with a hamstring injury.

“Vernon Philander is a no-go for the Test series. He is still very much in his rehab phase,” Moosajee said. “Kyle Abbott has made a full recovery from his hamstring strain and he will be ready for the Johannesburg Test.”
