“We’re not sure of the nature of the injury at this point”

New Zealand pace bowler Tim Southee suffered an injury to his left foot while bowling during the third ODI against Sri Lanka in Nelson on Thursday.

Southee conceded 44 runs off the six overs he bowled before he limped off the field. As a result, fellow seamer Matt Henry has been called up for the fourth ODI in Nelson on January 2.

As of now, New Zealand are unsure about the severity of Southee’s injury or how long he will be out of action for.

“Tim felt pain in his left foot early in the second innings and was forced to come off,” New Zealand head coach Mike Hesson said. “We’re not sure of the nature of the injury at this point and will need to find out more information over the coming days.

“Matt comes back into the squad having performed strongly in the opening two ODIs, so we know he’ll join us in good form.”

Henry represented New Zealand in the first two ODIs and took four wickets in both matches. He is currently the leading wicket-taker in the series with eight scalps at an incredible average of 10.25.
