Pace bowler Dushmantha Chameera claimed his maiden five-wicket haul as Sri Lanka fought their way back into contention on the second day of the second Test against New Zealand in Hamilton.

Starting out the day on 264/7, Sri Lanka only managed to add 28 runs to their overnight score before they were bowled out for 292.

Tim Southee was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Trent Boult and Doug Bracewell snapped up two wickets apiece and Neil Wagner chipped in with one.

Trailing by 292 runs, New Zealand got off to an excellent start as Martin Guptill and Tom Latham amassed an 81-run partnership before Latham was caught by Dimuth Karunaratne at leg gully off the bowling of Chameera for 28.

Kane Williamson fell shortly after and was joined in the pavilion by Guptill, who scored 50 off 77 balls, which included nine boundaries and a six.

New Zealand struggled after Guptill’s dismissal as they started to collapse. Mitchell Santner, BJ Watling and Bracewell all made promising starts to their innings, but they were unable to convert their starts into bigger scores as they were dismissed for 38, 28 and 30 respectively.

Chameera was the most successful bowler with five wickets, while Rangana Herath took two and Nuwan Pradeep and Suranga Lakmal claimed one wicket each.

New Zealand ended day two on 232/9 and will continue batting tomorrow at 10:00 local time or 21:00 GMT (Previous day).
