“I just have to put my hand up and make sure I am fit”

Australia have been given a major boost after it was announced that batsman Usman Khawaja is likely to be fit for the Boxing Day Test against the West Indies.

Khawaja is currently nursing a hamstring injury he suffered while fielding on the second day of the second Test against New Zealand in Perth. As a result of the injury, he missed the third and final Test in Adelaide, which was the first-ever day-night Test in history, and will also be unavailable for the first Test against the West Indies in Hobart on December 10.

But, the 28-year-old believes that he will be fully fit for the second Test, which will start on December 26 in Melbourne.

“I should be training at full pace next week. It’s about getting work into my legs after that,” Khawaja said. “If the selectors want to pick me, they will pick me – I just have to put my hand up and make sure I am fit.”

Khawaja scored two centuries in the series against New Zealand before he sustained the injury and he will be looking to maintain that momentum when he makes his comeback.
