England batsman Ian Bell has admitted that he was “gutted” after learning that he would not be part of the Test team for the upcoming tour of South Africa.
Bell is one of England’s most experienced players, but has struggled with the bat as of late, scoring just one Test century since July 2014.
In the recent three-Test series against Pakistan, Bell only managed to amass 158 runs, which included one half-century, at an average of 31.60.
However, upon naming the Test squad, national selector James Whitaker insisted that Bell’s Test career is not over.
“I’m absolutely gutted not to be selected for the tour to SA,” Bell said via Twitter. “I certainly feel I could have contributed out there and have been working tirelessly to get into the best possible condition for the tour.
“I’m going to enjoy a winter break with my family for the first time in 11 years and come back determined to win my place back. Wishing all the guys selected the best of luck.”
