Former Sri Lanka batsman Mahela Jayawardene has inked a deal to represent Central Districts in the upcoming Georgie Pie Super Smash, which is New Zealand’s domestic Twenty20 competition.

Jayawardene, who retired from international cricket after the 2015 World Cup in March, has played a lot of domestic Twenty20 cricket this year as he represented Sussex in the Natwest T20 Blast and the Jamaica Tallawahs in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL).

The Georgie Pie Super Smash gets underway on November 5, but Jayawardene will play his first game for Central Districts against Wellington in Nelson on November 19.

“Mahela’s incredible talent and vast experience will add enormous value to our already talented but still youthful team of players in the back half of the Super Smash,” Central Districts head coach Heinrich Malan told reporters.
