Sri Lanka were able to deal India two major blows before heavy rain led to most of the first day being abandoned in Colombo.

Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews would have been delighted with his decision to bowl first as he only had to wait two balls before Dhammika Prasad clean bowled India opener Lokesh Rahul for two runs.

India lost Ajinkya Rahane soon after as he was given out lbw off the bowling of Nuwan Pradeep for eight runs.

Cheteshwar Pujara and India captain Virat Kohli stabilised the innings with an unbeaten 36-run partnership before the heavens parted.

With the rain refusing to relent, the umpires had no choice but to bring play to an end for the day.

Pujara finished on 19 off 42 balls, which included two boundaries, while Kohli remained undefeated on 14 off 34 deliveries, which included two boundaries as well.

Prasad and Pradeep claimed one wicket each.

India ended day one on 50/2 and will continue batting tomorrow at 09:45 local time, 04:15 GMT.
