Australia opener David Warner scored 85 and batsman Steven Smith made an unbeaten 78 to put England under the cosh on the first day of the fifth Ashes Test at the The Oval.

England captain Alastair Cook would have been mulling over his decision to bowl first as Warner and Chris Rogers, who is playing in his final Test, amassed a 110-run partnership, during which Warner brought up his half-century, before Rogers was caught by Cook at first slip off the bowling of Mark Wood for 43.

Warner and Smith kept the runs flowing with a 51-run stand before Warner was caught by Adam Lyth at slip off the bowling of Moeen Ali.

Warner’s fantastic knock of 85 came off 131 balls and included 11 boundaries.

Australia lost captain Michael Clarke, who is also playing in his final Test, soon after for 15 runs after his review to reverse a caught behind decision failed.

But, Smith continued to plough on as he and Adam Voges put together an unbeaten 101-run partnership, during which Smith surpassed his half-century, before stumps was called.

Smith finished on 78 off 132 balls, which included nine boundaries and a six, while Voges remained undefeated on 47 off 87 deliveries, which included eight boundaries.
