India’s Ajinkya Rahane may be known for his batting, but the 27-year-old entered the record books on Friday after becoming the first non-wicketkeeper player to take eight catches in a Test match.
Rahane achieved the feat on the third day of the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle, during which India were set a target of 176 to win after Sri Lanka wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Chandimal scored a career-best 162 not out.
Rahane’s took catches to dismiss Dimuth Karunaratne Lahiru Thirimanne and Chandimal in the first innings before proceeding to add Dhammika Prasad, Kumar Sangakkara, Thirimanne, Jehan Mubarak, and Rangana Herath to his list of victims in the second innings.
Former England wicketkeeper Jack Russell and South Africa wicketkeeper-batsman AB de Villiers hold the record for the most catches taken in a Test match with 11 apiece.
