England wicketkeeper-batsman is unlikely to play in the fifth and final ODI against New Zealand after splitting the webbing on his left hand.
Buttler suffered the injury during a fielding drill at Chester-le-Street in Durham and was forced to leave the practice session in order to tend to the wound.
England have announced that they will confirm whether Buttler will be fit for the match on Saturday morning.
Should Buttler not be available for the fifth ODI, it will be a major blow for England as the series is tied 2-2 after they chased down their highest ODI total in the fourth match in Nottingham.
It has also been announced that Jonathan Bairstow has been added to the ODI squad as a potential replacement for Buttler.
