New Zealand batsman Kane Williamson scored an unbeaten 92 and opener Martin Guptill made 70 to leave England tired and demoralised at the end of the second day of the first Test at Lord’s.

Williamson and Guptill were well supported by opening batsman Tom Latham, who scored 59.

Starting out the day on 354/7, England’s lower order completely collapsed as they were bowled out for 389.

However, all-rounder Moeen Ali managed to convert his overnight score of 49 to 58, which came off 107 balls and included nine boundaries, before he was caught by Latham off the bowling of Trent Boult.

Boult and debutant Matt Henry picked up four wickets apiece, while Tim Southee and Mark Craig chipped in with one wicket each.

Trailing by 389, New Zealand got off to a brilliant start as Guptill and Latham amassed a 148-run partnership, during which both batsmen brought up their half-centuries, before Latham was given out lbw off the bowling of Ali.

Latham’s solid knock of 59 came off 98 balls and included 10 boundaries.
