England still retain the upper hand despite the West Indies managing to score 299 on the second day of the second Test in Grenada.

Starting out the day on 188/5, West Indies all-rounder Marlon Samuels and captain Denesh Ramdin converted their 59-run partnership into a 94-run stand, during which Samuels brought up his seventh Test century, before he was caught by Ian Bell at second slip off the bowling of James Anderson.

Samuels’ brilliant knock of 103 came off 228 balls and included 14 boundaries.

Following Samuels’ dismissal, the West Indies’ middle and lower order collapsed as they went from 223/6 to 247/9.

However, Devendra Bishoo and Shannon Gabriel amassed a last-gasp 52-run partnership before Bishoo was given out lbw off the bowling of Moeen Ali for 30.

Bishoo reviewed the decision right away, but replays showed that the ball was pitching in line and going on to hit off stump. This led to the third umpire upholding the original decision.

Stuart Broad was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets, while Anderson and Chris Jordan snapped up two wickets apiece and Ali and Ben Stokes chipped in with one wicket each as the West Indies were bowled out for 299.

Trailing by 299, England got off to an excellent start as skipper Alastair Cook and Jonathan Trott amassed an unbeaten 74-run partnership before bad light brought play to an end for the day.

Cook finished on 37 off 92 balls, which included six boundaries, while Trott remained undefeated on 32 off 69 deliveries, which included five boundaries.

England ended day two on 74/0 and will continue batting tomorrow at 10:00 local time or 14:00 GMT.
