South Africa all-rounder Jean Paul (JP) Duminy has been appointed as the Delhi Daredevils’ captain for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Duminy, who was one of the few players retained by the franchise, was handed the leadership role ahead of veteran India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh and Sri Lanka skipper Angelo Mathews.

However, Duminy will be expected to improve Delhi’s record from last season, where they finished in last place after winning only two out of their 14 matches.

According to Delhi chief executive Hemant Dua, head coach Gary Kirsten believed that Duminy was the right candidate to take control of the reigns.

“JP is the right choice to lead the team for the upcoming season,” Kirsten said in a media release. “He has the necessary experience and demeanour to take the team forward. I have seen him progress and mature as a player and leader through the years with the South African national team.”

When asked why Singh had not been made captain, Dua said: “We want him to go and enjoy the game rather than be under any sort pressure.”
