Fans will get to watch World Cup matches free of charge on Doordarshan until February 17 following an order from the Supreme Court on Tuesday.

The Supreme Court stayed an order from the Delhi High Court, which restrained Doordarshan from sharing its live feed with cable operators for free.

The Supreme Court went through with the order despite a plea from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), ESPN and Star, all of whom claim that they are losing revenue due to Doordarshan’s free live feed.

“This arrangement of DD showing free feed had been there for the last seven years. Let it continue,” a Supreme Court bench, which consisted of Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose, said.

The Supreme Court has now asked ESPN and Star to submit their suggestions and added that they will take up the case on February 17.
