Surrey have appointed Gareth Batty as their new captain following Grame Smith’s decision to retire from all forms of the game.

Smith, who captained South Africa for nearly 12 years, was supposed to lead Surrey this season as he initially signed a three-year deal in 2012. However, due to injuries, his first two seasons with the club were cut short.

“Gareth is a very honest man, of fine character and a good leader,” Surrey’s director of cricket Alec Stewart said. “He has the respect of the dressing room and the club is proud to have him.

“It is a huge honour to be appointed the captain of Surrey County Cricket Club and we have every confidence that he will lead the team forward.”
