Adelaide Strikers batsman Travis Head smashed a scintillating 71 to help his side cruise past the Melbourne Renegades by 22 runs.

Strikers captain Johan Botha would have been pondering over his decision to bat first after Craig Simmons, Tim Ludeman and Ryan ten Doeschate were dismissed in quick succession.

Head and Kelvin Smith stabilised the innings with a 90-run partnership, during which Head brought up his half-century, before he was caught by Ben Stokes at deep midwicket off the bowling of Fawad Ahmed.

Head’s magnificent knock of 71 came off 34 balls and included seven boundaries and four sixes.

Smith and Botha kept the runs flowing with a 50-run partnership before Botha was caught by James Pattinson at short third man off the bowling of Nathan Rimmington for 32.

Thanks to Smith’s unbeaten knock of 41, which came off 34 balls and included four boundaries, the Strikers finished on 166/5 off their 20 overs.

Rimmington was the pick of the bowlers with two wickets, while Ahmed and Pattinson chipped in with one wicket apiece.

Chasing 167 to win, the Renegades got off to a poor start as opening batsman Alex Doolan was clean bowled by Gary Putland for 12 runs.

Callum Ferguson only made six runs before he was caught by Alex Ross at deep square leg off the bowling of Kane Richardson.

Stokes and Matthew Wade steadied the innings with a 50-run partnership before Stokes was caught by Richardson at long-on off the bowling of Adam Zampa for 33.

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan made 22 runs as well before he was caught by Putland at long-off off the bowling of Botha.

Ben Rohrer scored 17 runs before he was brilliantly caught by Simmons at short fine leg off the bowling of Ben Laughlin.

Pattinson mustered three runs before he was caught by Putland at deep square leg off the bowling of Laughlin.

Despite a quickfire 23 from Tom Beaton, the Renegades still ended up losing the match by 22 runs.

Zampa and Laughlin snapped up two wickets apiece, while Putland, Richardson and Botha claimed one wicket each.

Head was named Man of the Match for his spectacular knock of 71.
