Williamson celebrates after scoring his maiden double century

New Zealand batsman Kane Williamson scored an unbeaten 242 and wicketkeeper BJ Waling made 142 not out as they battered Sri Lanka on the fourth day of the second Test in Wellington.

In addition to their personal milestones, Williamson and Watling also broke the record for New Zealand’s highest sixth-wicket partnership in Test history.

Starting out of the day on 253/5, Williamson and Watling converted their 94-run partnership into an unbeaten 365-run partnership, during which Williamson brought up his maiden double century and Watling his fourth Test century, before New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum decided to declare.

Williamson ended up making a career-best 242, which came off 438 balls and included 18 boundaries, while Watling made a career-best 142, which came off 333 balls and included nine boundaries and a six.

Nuwan Pradeep was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Rangana Herath and Dhammika Prasad chipped in with one wicket apiece as New Zealand set Sri Lanka a target of 390 to win.

Chasing 390 to win, Sri Lanka got off to a solid start before Dimuth Karunaratne was caught by Hamish Rutherford at mid-off off the bowling of Mark Craig for 17.

Kaushal Silva and Prasad, who came in as the nightwatchman, amassed an unbeaten three-run partnership before stumps was called.

Silva finished on 20 off 49 balls, which included two boundaries, while Prasad remained undefeated on one.

Craig was the only bowler to take a wicket.

Sri Lanka ended day four on 45/1 and will continue batting tomorrow at 11:00 local time or 22:00 GMT (previous day).
