Melbourne Renegades pace bowler James Pattinson took three wickets and captain Aaron Finch smashed 48 to help their side breeze past the Sydney Thunder by eight wickets at the Docklands Stadium.

However, Thunder batsman Daniel Hughes deserves some credit as he made a valiant 40.

Finch would have been delighted with his decision to bowl first after Pattinson and Andre Russell ripped through the Thunder’s top and middle order to leave them reeling at 47/5.

Hughes and Chris Hartley stemmed the bleeding with a 51-run partnership before Hartley was run out by Dwayne Bravo for 23.

Thanks to Hughes’ unbeaten knock of 40, which came off 35 balls and included three boundaries, the Thunder finished on 114/6 off their 20 overs.

Pattinson was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets, while Russell chipped in with two.

Chasing 115 to win, the Renegades got off to a poor start as opening batsman Matthew Wade was clean bowled by Dirk Nannes for 20.

Finch and Callum Ferguson made up for the early loss of Wade with a 58-run partnership before Finch was caught by Hughes at deep square leg off the bowling of Nathan Hauritz.

Finch’s excellent knock of 48 came off 37 balls and included eight boundaries.

Ferguson and Russell amassed an unbeaten 24-run partnership to carry the Renegades across the finish line with 37 balls to spare.

Ferguson scored 30 off 24 balls, which included one boundary and a six, while Russell remained undefeated on 16 off seven deliveries, which included one boundary and a six as well.

Nannes and Hauritz claimed one wicket each.

Pattinson edged out Finch for the Man of the Match award.
