Agar made a dazzling 98 during his Test debut against England last year

Australia spinner Ashton Agar has been included in the squad for the fourth and final Test against India in Sydney.

Agar has been called up since the national selectors are mulling over whether they should use a twin spin attack at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).

Agar has not played any Test cricket since the first two Tests of last year’s Ashes series in England. During the first Test of that series, Agar, who was making his debut, scored an incredible 98 when he came in to bat at number 11.

The decision to include Agar in the squad for the final Test against India comes as a surprise to many people, especially since he has only taken seven wickets at an average of 45.14 in the ongoing Sheffield Shield season.

However, Australia stand-in captain Steven Smith defended the move, and said: “I think he’s bowling very well at the moment. He’s a good addition to the squad. We’ll see how the wicket is in Sydney when we get there and we’ll go from there.

“We’ll just have to wait and see what the wicket is like. We’re not too sure what it will be like. Last year it had a bit of grass on it and previously it’s been quite a spin friendly wicket. So I think it’s more of a see how the wicket is and if he’s needed then he can play.”
