Sri Lanka spinner Rangana Herath will miss the first Test against New Zealand after tearing his hamstring during a training session.

Sri Lanka team manager Michael de Zoysa also confirmed that Herath is likely to be out of action for the next three weeks.

“I think Rangana’s struggling to make the second Test as well,” de Zoysa added.

There were doubts about Herath playing the first Test right from the beginning due to personal reasons.

In fact, he even stayed back in Sri Lanka while the rest of the team travelled to New Zealand on December 18.

Herath’s injury is a major blow to Sri Lanka, especially since he has been the top wicket-taker in Test matches this year with 60 scalps at an impressive average of 27.45.

Sri Lanka will play a two-day warm-up match against a New Zealand XI in Queenstown on December 21 before the first Test gets underway on Boxing Day in Christchurch.
