Friends of Australia pace bowler Josh Hazlewood’s father have hit the jackpot after the 23-year-old made his Test debut today.

The friends of Hazlewood’s father bet AU$100 with British bookmakers almost nine years ago that Josh would play Test cricket for Australia before he was 30.

Since he accomplished that today, they each stand to make AU$50,000.

“He was 15 at the time when they put the bet on,” Trevor Hazlewood told the Courier Mail. “They got odds of 500-1 and they all had $100 on.

“The guys were in England at the time and that is when they put the bet on. They bet that Josh would play Test cricket for Australia before he was 30. I wish I had had $100 on the bet too.”

Hazlewood also revealed that his friends came close to collecting their winnings two years ago when his son was named 12th man for a Test match against South Africa in Perth.

“They would have bit their fingernails off when he just missed out in Perth a couple of years ago,” Hazlewood said.
