Warriors head coach Piet Botha has announced that he will be stepping down with immediate effect following the franchise’s rough start to the South African domestic season.

It has been confirmed that assistant coach Malibongwe Maketa will take over as head coach for the remainder of the season, after which the Warriors will advertise the position.

“After some serious deliberation and some poor results over the last few months I have decided that I will not re-apply for the position and that it is only fair on the team, support staff, the board and the public that I step aside as head coach at this time,” Botha said. “I believe that the team is in need of a new direction and part of that process is to get a coach with a fresh approach.”

In the ongoing season, the Warriors have not only lost both their first-class matches, but are also in last place on the one-day points table after losing four out of five games. In addition to this, they ended up finishing second-last in the Ram Slam T20 Challenge since they only won three out of their 10 matches.
