Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) have announced that veteran batsman Mahela Jayawardene will miss the third ODI against England in Hambantota due to personal reasons.

Jayawardene, who did not travel with the squad, has been replaced by batsman Ashan Priyanjan.

However, it still remains unclear whether Sri Lanka will opt for Priyanjan or 32-year-old batsman Thilina Kandamby, whose last ODI came against Scotland in July 2011.

Sri Lanka team manager Michael de Zoysa noted that Jayawardene should be back in action during the fourth ODI in Colombo “if he is picked”.

However, if Jayawardene is available for the fourth ODI, it is almost certain that he will be selected, especially since he has made scores of 55 and 77 in the first two matches of the series. In fact, he was even named Man of the Match for his unbeaten knock of 77 in the second ODI.

Sri Lanka currently hold a 2-0 lead over England heading into the third ODI, which will get underway on December 3.
