England captain Alastair Cook has become the latest cricketer to wish Australia batsman Phillip Hughes a speedy recovery following his horrific injury.

Hughes, who was playing for South Australia, underwent surgery earlier today after being struck on the side of the head by a bouncer from New South Wales seamer Sean Abbott.

Hughes has also represented Worcestershire and Middlesex in the past, which has led to many of the England players playing alongside him or against him in the county season.

“The whole team has been in shock all day,” Cook said. “All our thoughts and prayers are with Phillip and we’ve got guys from Worcestershire and Middlesex and quite a lot of us have played against him.

“It’s a really saddening incident and fingers crossed he can show the same fight he’s shown throughout his whole career and pull through. The whole dressing room is just massively concerned for Phillip.

“Our player safety is kind of irrelevant at the moment – it’s all about him and his family and friends and we just want to send us our best from here.”
