Legendary Australia wicketkeeper-batsman Adam Gilchrist believes that India batsman Virat Kohli “has the capability of being the best player in the world”.
Gilchrist’s comments come after Kohli has scored 190 runs, which includes two half-centuries, in the ongoing ODI series against Sri Lanka.
“Virat has the capability of being the best player in the world,” Gilchrist was quoted as saying in the Herald Sun. “He has some [issues] that he will need to overcome away from India but I believe he can do it and has the game and hunger to do it.”
Gilchrist also expects Kohli to thrive as captain in the first Test against Australia in Brisbane. Kohli was handed the reins after regular skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was ruled out of the first Test with a thumb injury.
“He (Kohli) may well thrive with this opportunity, he is a big game player, so I think he will really enjoy taking on that responsibility,” Gilchrist said.
However, Gilchrist also noted that India will definitely miss Dhoni during the first Test against Australia.
“People have thrown questions up but they have done it in all forms under him,” Gilchrist said. “Dhoni is a wonderful leader of Indian cricket and has had a huge impact. There has been a calmness about him and the way they go about their business.”
